NOTES
FROM THE
GRID.

I write about the decisions behind the work. Some pieces were published at Integral. Others begin here, between projects.

INDEPENDENT WRITING / DARK MATTER GRID

A thought.
A little room.

Short notes on the way I work. Written for Dark Matter Grid.

BRAND THINKING

Before the first mark.

Before I choose a typeface, I need to know who the work is for and what it should help them do. Those decisions pull the rest of the project into place.

That is the dark matter. You might never see the brief, but you should feel its weight in the finished work.

LAYOUT

Give the eye a pause.

White space controls how quickly you move through a page. A pause before a headline can make you stop. Too much space can leave you wondering whether something is missing.

I want room with a reason. When a layout feels slow, I look at what the gap is asking you to wait for.

THE SECOND READ

The small type counts.

A campaign can get your attention from across the street. Then you get closer.

I care about that second read. The date has to be legible. The booking link has to make sense. If you like the poster but cannot work out what to do, the design has left you standing there.

PROCESS

Make a version.

An idea is easy to agree with while it lives in a sentence. I want to see what it does on a screen or in someone’s hands.

A rough version gives you something specific to question. The awkward part usually helps: the line that won’t fit, or the step that needs too much explaining. Now there is a problem I can work on.
