THE STARTING POINT

Let the walk set the pace.

A garden already gives you reasons to stop. I used those pauses to structure a Diptyque fragrance encounter, with recorded sound introducing each scene. You can choose whether to try the scent at that point.

The route connects the plants in front of you to an imagined scene. A proposed Do Son chapter uses tuberose and coastal air as references. The markers need to explain that connection without filling the garden with instructions.

The experience

A short walk, in chapters.

A botanical garden or hotel courtyard hosts the proposed route. Oval markers and illustrated field cards give the experience a physical presence. A phone guide carries the audio, with a manual chapter selector available throughout.

Enter

Choose a printed route card and open the audio guide. The starting point explains the length of the walk.

Wander

A short sound chapter introduces the atmosphere of each stopping point.

Encounter

An optional scent station connects the scene to a fragrance. Visitors decide whether to sample.

Select

A chapter card records the preferred scene and leads to an individual sample at the counter.

Art direction

The route has a visual rhythm.

Botanical illustration and oval markers connect the printed invitation to the physical walk. Each chapter uses the same information order, allowing the setting and sound to change while the route remains clear.

The Twilight Edition

A later evening session could change the lighting and audio, giving the same route a different atmosphere.

A garden at home

A printed listening folio and accessible audio chapters would let someone revisit the scenes after leaving the installation.

Proposed pilot

Begin in one courtyard.

Try the route with three marked checkpoints and one host. Keep chapter selection manual at first, then consider location-triggered audio once the sequence works.

Keep the walk readable

The host would observe where visitors pause or lose the route. Printed cards would provide the chapter text for anyone who prefers reading.

What to learn

Record route completion and sampling-counter visits. Ask whether the sound helped someone remember the fragrance. These are questions for a pilot, with no launch results claimed.

THE WORK, TOGETHER

The walk gives each fragrance a scene and a sound to remember it by.
